Sophie Gateau's VIA Chapter I

Meet Sophie Gateau, a Parisian ultracyclist, author and photographer, Café du Cycliste ambassador, whose journey in VIA Chapter I beautifully captured the spirit of adventure and the philosophy of inclusion that defines the event.

From her first rides over small distances to reaching the edge of Europe, Sophie’s cycling journey has always been about pushing her limits and embracing the unknown. “You start small like most people,” Sophie shares, “and then you go further, further, further, and at some point, you realize you can go really far, and you are at the end of Europe.”

Her first ultra-race opened her eyes to the world of long-distance cycling. When Sophie discovered VIA, she found an event that addressed her desires for safety, exploration, and meaningful connections. “I wanted to do VIA because the team is great, and it answers some of the things I don’t like about ultra racing—like very big roads or places where I don’t feel safe. VIA takes you out of major busy roads, and I love Spain. For France, I know it, but it’s always good to go back.”

Riding on her terms

For Sophie, VIA wasn’t about speed or competition—it was about resilience and joy. “I’m not fast, but I can ride forever,” she says. Her approach to preparation reflects her belief that anyone can take on a challenge like VIA. “I have no training plan, I have no coach. I hope I can show people that you don’t need everything to do a race like this. You can go as you are, and most of the time, you will succeed.

Sophie’s favorite part of the experience? The landscapes, the refuge gates, and the people she met along the way. “I ride with people I don’t know, and they look great. Everything looks great—the refuge, the gates, the landscape.”

Her adaptability is her greatest strength, honed through years of experience cycling through different countries. She’s learned to sleep anywhere—sometimes in cemeteries, which she finds safe—and thrives on the freedom and unpredictability of the road.

A race for all

Sophie’s story embodies what VIA is all about: inclusion, diversity, and the power of personal adventure. “It’s not about going fast; it’s about going long,” Sophie explains. This ethos welcomes riders of all backgrounds and abilities, creating a community where everyone can find their place.

Reflecting on the inaugural edition, Sophie says, “I’m very happy to be part of VIA. It’s promising, it’s inclusive, it’s diverse. It’s everything.” We are so thankful for Sophie's presence and for her beautiful words about VIA. We hope you enjoyed following Hannibal's path.
